Data from the Miami Police Department on aggravated assaults and assault-related homicide occurring in 1996 and 1997 were analyzed in an evaluation of ethnic differences in firearm use, injury, and lethality in aggravated assaults and homicides. There was particular interest in comparing Latinos to non-Latino Whites and non-Latino Blacks. Latino, Black, and White perpetrators are equally likely to use a gun in violent encounters.
