The authors propose and test a methodology for translating global media reports of armed conflict into quantitative data. Variables include the broad type and number of weapons involved (firearm vs. explosive), numbers of perpetrators and victims, perpetrator intent, vulnerability of victims (e.g., armed vs. unarmed), health effect (fatal vs. nonfatal injury), region, and other factors.
