The author reviewed the more commonly used approaches designed to prevent firearm violence and unintentional injury and examine their effectiveness. The approaches reviewed included legislative reform, product modification, community-based education and media campaigns, parent education programs, and child education programs. Of the more than 80 programs described at least briefly in the literature, few have been adequately evaluated as to their effectiveness.
