The authors reviewed the records of 5,583 autopsies in Mthatha General Hospital, South Africa, of murder victims between 1993 and 2005. Among other things, they found that gunshot-related homicides more than doubled between 1993 and 2001, then by 2005 had decreased to just over 1.5 times the 1993 rate. The majority of homicide victims (82%) were male.
