The author reviews the association between availability of firearms and their misuse. After comparing firearm availability and mortality rates between developed countries (e.g. US and Canada) and among urban and rural regions in the same country, the author argues that easier access to firearms increases the likelihood for misuse. The author also examines policy implications and suggests restricting access to firearms through stricter licensing, regulating safe storage and designated “gun-free zones”.
