986 adults in 3 types of rural households (farm, town, and non-farm, non-town) in Iowa were interviewed to assess the prevalence and storage of firearms. About 67% of respondents possessed firearms, with 85% of farm households and 61.1% of town households reporting firearms. 10.5% of farm households reported having a loaded gun compared to 5.5% of town households. Having taken a gun safety course or having a history of alcohol abuse more than doubled the chance that a household had a loaded gun. 986 adults in 3 types of rural households (farm, town, and non-farm, non-town) in Iowa were interviewed to assess the prevalence and storage of firearms.
