One case study in this discussion of the role of public health advocacy was the Australian policy response to the Port Arthur gun massacre. “The preventive theme of ‘not going down the American road’ became the single most expressed reference point to justify the new laws.” As with restrictions to civilian access to dynamite, armored vehicles and anti-tank weapons, the issue was finally resolved by value judgments, not epidemiology.
