Household Firearm Ownership and Storage Practices
The best state-level data on firearm ownership levels and storage were provided by Okoro et al in 2005.1 The graphs summarize the detailed results. You can compare your state to other states in the region or nationally. For instance, Texas is a fairly average state in terms of household gun ownership and gun storage levels.
These graphs also indicate the potential risk for children and youth from improperly stored firearms. A child in Massachusetts is 20 times less likely to be living in a home with a loaded, unlocked firearm compared to a child in Alabama. Subsequent studies examine the state-level associations between gun ownership/storage and gun suicide as well as unintentional gun death of children.
